This is from an email I sent to my family back in September 2009. I’ve been cleaning out my work email and came across similar updates from my travels. They brought back many fun memories!
Here are some more pictures from my second week in Penang. I’ll send pictures from Singapore separately.
First, I received some complaints that I hadn’t actually sent any pictures of Penang. That’s kind of hard to do since I haven’t been out in the city very much and when I am, we’re in a speeding car. The driving is kind of crazy, with people weaving in and out, stopping suddenly and tailgating a lot. Also, the one time we went to an area that was actually kind of pretty, I’d forgotten my camera. So here goes.
Traffic jam (front and back):
Miscellaneous pictures of the area:
Most of the city looks like this up close:
Part of Penang is on an island, which is where we are working (Georgetown). It is connected to the mainland (Butterworth) by a very long bridge:
It is usually packed with cars:
I’ve been trying to eat a variety of foods here. I’m sorry to say that we went to a “western-style” restaurant one evening. However, I was able to try escargot there, which I thought was delicious! It was baked in some kind of creamy sauce, so maybe that’s kind of cheating.
The restaurant had this great boat display (very blurry picture):
And I got a free gift with my set meal:
Can you guess the name of restaurant?
The next day, we went a little crazy, and I tried this:
Yes, that’d be a chicken foot. It was disgusting! Granted, I ate the bone before I realized what it was. I just wanted to get it over as quickly as possible! The picture was taken with my colleague’s phone, which explains the poor picture quality.
That’s all for now. Hopefully, this email won’t be humongous!
Love you all!
Emily
