First week in Penang

This is from an email I sent to my family back in September 2009.  I’ve been cleaning out my work email and came across similar updates from my travels.  They brought back many fun memories!

I had my first taste of authentic Japanese food this week.  Here is my colleague’s meal:

And my meal (kind of blurry), which consisted of miso soup, noodles, grilled eel, salad (just like at Benihana’s!), tempura prawn, rice, lotus root, and fruit:

I forgot to get a picture of the sashimi (raw fish on rice) when they brought it out.  But here’s my face after I had my first taste:

Ugh, kind of slimy, but mostly it was hard to breath because I had too much wasabi on my chopsticks.  I also had a taste of sake – yuck!  Tasted kind of like how I imagine rubbing alcohol to taste.

Later that week, we ate at a restaurant called Bali Hai.  Customers had the option of ordering from a menu or selecting their entrée.  I’m not 100% sure what these things are, but they looked kind of like miniature versions of the creature from the movie “Tremors”

The whole wall of creatures:

After our meal, with my two colleagues (Nora and Clarence):

The restaurant sign.  You may not be able to read it, but along the bottom, it says “If it swims, we have it”.  Very true.

Looking into the restaurant.  It was packed by the time we left:

Walking along the coastline/highway:

The view from my hotel room, showing the stormy clouds over the mainland on Saturday morning:

I took some pictures at the pool, but don’t think I’ll make it to the beach, since the weather looks questionable.
